Description:
The key to successful interpersonal relationships is communication. In education, teachers have to create a bond so that students will feel validated in the classroom. Teachers also have to create relationships with parents and community members so that they can be partners in the education of their students. Communication involves the use of oral or written verbal symbols. On other occasions, communication involves various types of non-verbal symbols, including body language.
What we fail to understand is that communication is culture bound. The way an individual communicates comes deep within his or her culture. Of course, a person may know more than one culture or may be competent in a combination of cultures. Nonetheless, one basic truth prevails: communication is a product of culture.
The training focuses on educating staff on differences across and within cultures, biases that may exist subconsciously, and ways to communicate appropriately among other cultures other than your own.
Topics include:
- Your First Memories of Difference
- Stereotyping
- Dimensions of Cultural
- Active Listening Skills
