Description:
Cultural proficiency is defined as the knowledge, skills, and attitudes/beliefs that enable people to work well with, respond effectively to, and be supportive of people in cross-cultural settings. "Cultural proficiency is a way of being that allows individuals and organizations to interact effectively with people who differ from them" (Randal Lindsay).
In this training you will learn what Cultural Proficiency is along the development process that occurs along a continuum. The continuum has 6 areas, starting from one end and building toward the other: 1) Cultural destructiveness, 2) cultural incapacity, 3) cultural blindness, 4) cultural pre-competence, 5) cultural competency, and 6) cultural proficiency.
Along with learning about the continuum and where you might be along your personal journey, you will also be engaged in learning the five essential elements that contribute to a system's ability to become more culturally proficient. The five elements are: 1) valuing diversity, 2) having the capacity for cultural self-assessment, 3) being conscious of the "dynamics" inherent when cultures interact, 4) institutionalizing cultural knowledge, and 5) developing adaptations to service delivery that reflects and understanding of diversity between and within cultures. If you're ready to engage in some courageous conversations about how culture impacts the way we do business in education, then this workshop is for you.
In this interactive training participants will:
- Be introduced to the Four Tools of Cultural Proficiency
- Discuss how understanding our own culture has an impact on how we work with staff and clients
- Learn how to use the Cultural Proficiency Continuum to facilitate personal and organizational change
